Activities of Daily Living Explained

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) are fundamental tasks individuals perform daily to maintain personal health, hygiene, and independence. These activities are critical for assessing an individual’s ability to live independently and are a key factor in determining eligibility for VA benefits like Aid and Attendance.

The VA Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly monetary benefit provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to eligible veterans and their surviving spouses who require assistance with daily activities. This benefit helps cover the costs of care, such as in-home assistance, assisted living, or nursing home care, enabling recipients to maintain a higher quality of life.

Types of ADLs

ADLs encompass self-care tasks that individuals typically perform daily.

The primary ADLs include:

  • Bathing: Washing the body, including showering, taking a bath, or sponge bathing, to maintain personal hygiene.
  • Dressing: Selecting appropriate clothing and putting on or taking off clothes, shoes, and accessories.
  • Eating: Feeding oneself, including the ability to use utensils or consume food and drink without assistance.
  • Toileting: Using the bathroom, including getting on or off the toilet and performing associated hygiene tasks.
  • Transferring (Mobility): Moving from one position to another, such as getting in or out of a bed, chair, wheelchair or vehicle.
  • Maintaining Continence: Controlling bladder and bowel functions or managing incontinence with minimal assistance.

Memory Loss (Cognitive Impairment)

For individuals with memory loss or cognitive impairments, such as those caused by Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or traumatic brain injury, the VA also recognizes the need for assistance with remembering to perform ADLs, such as prompts to bathe, dress, or eat.

Additionally, Veterans and spouses may also qualify for Aid and Attendance if they require regular supervision (custodial care).
