VA Benefits Overview

overview va benefits

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a range of monetary benefits to support veterans and their families. Below is a brief overview of some of the key programs available.

Disability Compensation

VA Disability Compensation is a monthly, tax-free payment to veterans who have injuries or illnesses that were caused—or made worse—by their military service. The amount you receive depends on the severity of your condition, rated on a scale from 0% to 100%. Veterans may qualify for additional benefits if they have dependents or multiple service-connected conditions.

Aid and Attendance (A&A)

Aid and Attendance is a monthly payment available to veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily living activities, such as bathing, dressing, or eating. Eligibility is based on income, assets, and the level of care needed. This benefit can help cover the cost of in-home care, assisted living, or a nursing home.

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)

DIC is a tax-free monthly payment for surviving spouses, children, or parents of a service member who died in the line of duty or as a result of a service-connected condition. This benefit helps ensure families are financially supported after such a loss.

Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)

Special Monthly Compensation is an additional amount paid to veterans who have very serious disabilities or need assistance with daily tasks due to service-connected conditions. It is not based on the standard disability rating schedule and may provide significant increases in monthly payments. It can also apply to spouses or dependents in certain cases.

VA Appeals

If your VA benefits claim is denied or you disagree with the decision, you have the right to appeal. The VA offers multiple appeal options.  Appeals give veterans a second chance to present their case.

VA Pension

You may be eligible for a VA pension if you are a low-income veteran or spouse, or if you need assistance with personal care activities such as bathing and dressing. To qualify, the veteran must have served during wartime.
