The VA Aid and Attendance (A&A) benefit is a monthly payment paid to Veterans, spouses, and surviving spouses who need long-term care, including home care, adult day care, board and care (residential care), assisted living, and skilled nursing facility care.
The benefit helps cover the cost of care, is tax-free, and does not need to be paid back.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the benefit, applicants must meet the following key requirements:
- Veteran must have served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a recognized wartime period.
- Veteran must be 65 years of age or older, or permanently disabled, living in a nursing home or receiving SSI.
- Veteran must have received an honorable or other than dishonorable discharge.
- Veteran or spouse requires assistance with some of the activities of daily living.
- Applicant meets the VA’s income and net worth requirements.
