VA Disability Claims
Get the Compensation You've Earned.
VA disability compensation is a monthly, tax-free payment for Veterans who got sick or injured while serving in the military or for Veterans whose service made an existing condition worse. Types of injuries and illnesses include both physical and mental health conditions.
VA Disability Benefit Amounts
VA disability compensation amounts are based on the veteran’s disability rating (a percentage from 0% to 100% assigned by the VA to indicate the severity of a veteran’s service-connected illness or injury), their marital status, and dependents.
| Disability Rating | Monthly Payment (2025) |
|---|---|
| 0% | $0.00 |
| 10% | $175.51 |
| 20% | $346.95 |
| 30% | $537.42 |
| 40% | $774.16 |
| 50% | $1,075.16 |
| 60% | $1,395.93 |
| 70% | $1,759.19 |
| 80% | $2,044.89 |
| 90% | $2,297.96 |
| 100% | $3,831.40 |
Basic Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for VA disability compensation, the Veteran must:
- Have served on active duty, active duty training or inactive duty training (National Guard or Reserves)
- Been discharged from the military under conditions other than dishonorable
- Have a service-related physical injury, illness or mental health condition
New Disability Claims
Veterans can file a new VA disability claim at any time if they believe they have a current medical condition related to their military service. Once the claim is submitted, the decision process can take several months or longer.
Increasing your Compensation
If a service-connected condition has worsened over time, veterans can file a request for an increase in their VA disability compensation with new evidence. Important: the VA also has the authority to lower a rating if it is determined that the evidence doesn’t support the current level.
Appealing a Decision
Veterans have the right to appeal a VA decision if they disagree with the outcome of a claim — whether it’s a denial of benefits, a lower-than-expected disability rating, or an incorrect effective date. There are several appeal options. Choosing the right path is important and can increase your chances of a successful outcome.
Filing a VA Disability Claim
Whether it’s a new claim, a request for a rating increase, or an appeal, navigating the VA disability claims process can be frustrating. Long wait times, confusing paperwork, and unfair denials leave thousands of veterans without the benefits they earned.
